A Gender-Just Energy Transition

In this episode of Full of Energy, Crissy Godfrey and Ellen Bomasang explore the concept of a gender-just energy transition, highlighting its critical nature in today’s world. They discussed the definition of a just energy transition, emphasizing the need to phase out fossil fuels and shift to a low-carbon system while ensuring that no one is left behind. Ellen, who works at the intersection of gender and energy, elaborated on the under-representation of women in the energy sector and the barriers they face, such as access to land, finance, and technology. They also discussed the opportunities in the energy transition, including the emergence of green jobs in sectors like clean energy, construction, and agriculture. However, they noted that women are currently well-positioned in some sectors but under-represented in others, particularly in higher-end green jobs. They concluded by discussing actions that can be taken to fully engage women in the energy transition, including policy measures like capacity building and promoting STEM for girls, as well as financial measures such as developing financial products adapted to the needs of women-owned businesses.
