AEE Fellow Induction Year: 2019

AEE Volunteer Position: Regional Vice President Asia Subcontinent Region

Dr. Binoy Krishna Choudhury is a distinguished academic, sustainability leader, and energy expert with over three decades of impactful work in energy management, renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, and sustainable development. He currently serves as Professor in the Department of Energy Management at the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata.

Dr. Choudhury’s association with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), USA, dates back to the early 2000s. He was the Founder Secretary of the first AEE Chapter in India, established in 2003 in Kolkata, and played a pivotal role in expanding the AEE network across the South Asian region. He actively supported and mentored the formation of AEE Delhi, AEE Western India (Nagpur), AEE Pune, AEE Pakistan, and the SSET Student Chapter in Kerala. Currently, he serves as VicePresident – International Member Development (Asia Subcontinent).

Under his leadership, AEE India Chapter IISWBM (subsequently renamed Kolkata IISWBM Chapter) hosted its first AEE-USA Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) international training and examination programs in 2007, conducted physically in major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore. These continued in virtual mode during COVID-19 and are now a benchmark in international energy certification programs in India.

He holds a Ph.D. in Solar Energy from IIT Kharagpur (1995) and has earned professional credentials including Certified Energy Manager (CEM, 2005), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Certified Renewable Energy Professional (REP), and Accredited Energy Auditor (AEA) from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India.

Dr. Choudhury has guided over 25 research and consultancy projects in energy and sustainability, mentored Ph.D. scholars, and trained hundreds of energy professionals across India. He has been an invited speaker at the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC)—now AEE World, and is spearheading the upcoming Net Zero Conference 2025 in India.

Inspired by Swami Vivekananda and the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Dr. Choudhury champions people-first leadership, advancing innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth through AEE and beyond.

My AEE Story

My education and institute (IISWBM) helped me to understand that our civilization is at the cross-road and energy happens to play a key role – both positive and negative – in happenings around us. A small beginning with Energy Club could help us contribute on the positive side of our life. As Swami Vivekananda pointed out – “Man is individual and at the same time universal…. Each is an infinite circle whose centre is everywhere and circumference nowhere”, our life expands to make this positive contribution stronger and happened through AEE.

When Larry visited our institute in 2001, we discovered a spirited friendship that already exists and calls us to discover the eternal universal brotherhood, to broaden our minds, our thoughts…to ‘stop not till the goal is reached’. AEE has gifted us that fraternity in which platform we could break all boundaries to become free to know each other, to feel for others, to work with others, ‘to help build a better society, to render the world the most beautiful services’ being in any energy profession we could be. In numbers, the figures in my experience since establishment of the first AEE Chapter in India in 2003 are also interesting – we are now three Chapters in India plus two Students’ Chapters, more than 150 members in India, more than 30 international awards were secured and almost equal number of students’ also secured AEE International Students’ Scholarship Awards in India. I enjoy peace in mind and strength in my spirit as through AEE I try to work responsive to the two above-mentioned thoughts. I also feel satisfaction to work at various levels with dignity as Assistant Director for Membership Development in Asian Subcontinent. I am honoured to be one of the CEM trainers and also to have interacted with world-famous personalities through AEE as well as friends from different parts of globe with faith to each other, with good wishes for each other.

Two schools of thought that torment minds of many people including me are like what Albert Einstein said, “A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depends on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the measure as I have received and am still receiving” and the other like what Mahatma Gandhi said, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed”.
