Performance Contracting and Funding Professional

The Certified Performance Contracting and Funding Professional (PCF) is an internationally recognized certification, that was created to “raise the standard” for professionals who deal with “funding”, which affects nearly all projects. Certified professionals who have earned this distinction have demonstrated competence by passing an exam on the best practices in performance contracting, energy project funding and financing. Perhaps even more valuable is their ability to avoid common pitfalls that can be worth millions of dollars. In the innovative project financing arena, professionals who have the PCF certification have the advantage.

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in performance contracting and energy project funding and financing.
  • To improve the practice of performance contracting and energy project funding and financing by encouraging professionals to partake in a continuing education program of professional development for performance contracting and energy project funding and financing professionals.
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of performance contracting and energy project funding and financing through completing the certification and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
  • To award special recognition to those energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in performance contracting and energy project funding and financing.


Applicant must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience
4-year engineering or architectural degree    
4-year business or related degree AND 3+ years related* experience
2-year associate degree AND 5+ years related* experience
NONE AND 8+ years related* experience
Current status of Certified Energy Manager® (CEM®)    

*Related experience in performance contracting or energy project funding or financing.

In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, PCF-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a PCF preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the PCF-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the PCFcertification examination. The PCF-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full PCF certification eligibility requirements.


All PCF candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory PCF training seminars, submit a PCF certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.

The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.

Step Two: Complete Your PCF Certification Application & Register for an Exam

U.S. International

Certification Application and Examination Fees:

  • $300 if exam is taken in conjunction with a live PCF training seminar
  • $400 if exam is taken remotely
  • Application and examination fees are nonrefundable

Certification Renewal:

  • $300 every three years
