Certified Industrial Energy Professional

Rising energy costs and inefficiency in plants and industrial facilities is continually driving the need for trained and experienced industrial energy professionals. The CIEP certification recognizes professionals as having the required knowledge and experience needed to succeed in the growing field of industrial and manufacturing energy efficiency.

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in industrial and manufacturing energy efficiency.
  • To improve the practice of industrial and manufacturing energy efficiency by encouraging professionals to partake in a continuing education program of professional development for industrial energy professionals.
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of industrial energy professionals through completing the certification and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
  • To award special recognition to those energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in industrial and manufacturing energy efficiency.


Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:




4-year related* degree  OR
Professional Engineer (PE)  OR Registered Architect (RA)


2+ years related* experience

4-year unrelated degree


3+ years related* experience

2-year associate degree


4+ years related* experience



6+ years related* experience

Current status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)



*Related degree in technology, plant engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering and related experience in manufacturing or industrial facilities or plant facilities operations.

In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CIEP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CIEP preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the CIEP-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the CIEP certification examination. The CIEP-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CIEP certification eligibility requirements.


All CIEP candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory CIEP training seminars, submit a CIEP certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.

The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.

Step Two: Complete Your CIEP Certification Application & Register for an Exam    

U.S. International

Certification Application and Examination Fees:

  • $300 if exam is taken in conjunction with a live CIEP training seminar
  • $400 if exam is taken remotely
  • Application and examination fees are nonrefundable

Certification Renewal:

  • $300 every three years
