Certified Energy Procurement Professional

AEE's Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP) program is designed to award special recognition to professionals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge, experience, competence and ethical fitness covering the full spectrum of activities related to the purchase, sale and marketing of electricity and natural gas. By obtaining the CEP credential, you will be establishing your status as a qualified expert in this growing area of specialized expertise within the restructured energy marketplace.

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in energy procurement.
  • To improve the practice of energy procurement by encouraging energy professionals in a continuing program of professional development.
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy procurement related disciplines and laws governing and affecting energy managers through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
  • To award special recognition to those energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for energy procurement.


Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience
4-year related* degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA) AND 3+ years related* experience
4-year unrelated degree AND 5+ years related* experience
2-year associate degree AND 5+ years related* experience
NONE   10+ years related* experience
Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)    

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in energy or building or facility management, or real estate, or procurement, or brokering.

In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CEP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CEP preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the CEP-IT certification application under step two below, and pass the CEP certification examination. The CEP-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CEP certification eligibility requirements.


All CEP candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory CEP training seminars, submit a CEP certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.

The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.

Step Two: Complete Your CEP Certification Application & Register for an Exam

U.S. International

Certification Application and Examination Fees:

  • $300 if exam is taken in conjunction with a live CEP training seminar
  • $400 if exam is taken remotely
  • Application and examination fees are nonrefundable

Certification Renewal:

  • $300 every three years
