Distributed Intelligence (DI) As A Means To Robust Grid Integration
Nandini Mouli, Ph.D., President, Founder & CEO, e Sai Consulting

Many US states have established very ambitious targets for renewable energy sources for their electricity supply with a view to develop sustainable and low-carbon options.  Even though these Distributed Energy Resources (DER) can provide other positive net value to the grid, such as avoided infrastructure investments and improved resilience, integration of these resources is extremely challenging and requires a new planning paradigm. Grid integration is the practice of developing efficient ways to deliver variable DER’s to the gridGood integration methods maximize the cost-effectiveness of incorporating variable DER’s into the power system while maintaining/increasing system stability and reliability. This seminar will discuss some issues related to the grid integration as well as how some latest technologies (DI) such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Distribution Automation (DA), Volt/VAR optimization (VVO) and smart inverters, among others, are poised to mitigate the same issues and lead the grid edge into the digital age.
