In the age of climate crisis mitigation through reduction of building energy use, energy management is the most impactful bang-for-the-buck in the toolbox of energy reduction strategies. The use of submeters to monitor electricity end uses, such as lighting and HVAC, is the key to a successful energy management strategy. Although it sounds like a slam dunk, designing and implementing a submeter strategy relies on more than good intentions. Electrical distribution, meter selection, installation and proper integration into a building management system are just a few of the many opportunities for success or failure of a well-intended energy monitoring strategy. This session will review experiences from several recent projects and map out a path for avoiding pitfalls along the road from project concept to operations.
BIOGRAPHIES
Susan Freed, Architect, CEM, LEED AP. Susan is the Project Manager for the Energy and Sustainability Division at County of San Diego since 2013. Her work at the County includes finding opportunities to increase the energy and water efficiency and sustainability of County operations, studying the feasibility of innovative solutions, and developing programs and projects to implement promising findings. She has hands-on experience with the challenges in creating sustainability momentum in the public sector. Previous to her position with the County, she worked for many years as an architect, architectural planner, and economic development professional. She is a licensed architect, has been LEED AP since 2005, and CEM since 2015.
Sandy Houck, CMVP, LC, LEED AP BD+C. Sandy has over 20 years’ experience providing lighting, daylighting, and Measurement & Verification (M&V) services to support clients’ energy goals for high performance and Zero Energy buildings. Her expertise as a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional is useful for LEED projects, but critical for high-performance building projects. Sandy develops preliminary electrical submetering designs used for Measurement & Verification, facilitates the integration of submeters into Building Automation Systems, analyzes initial submeter data to verify correct submeter installation, and monitors building operation. Sandy is an expert at data analysis, comparing trend data to design intent, and recommending corrective action for achieving high-performance goals during the first year of operation. Among her notable projects is the Alpine Branch Library—the first Zero Energy library certified by the Living Building Challenge.
