Building Skills for a Cleaner Energy Future: How BTAC Funding and AEE are Driving Change

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Training and Assessment Centers (BTAC) program is opening new doors for the next generation of clean energy professionals. Funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, BTACs provide hands-on training that helps commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities save energy, improve performance, and cut emissions—all while preparing students and workers for high-quality green jobs that don’t require a four-year degree.

In November 2023, DOE announced funding for 27 projects—17 of them based at community colleges, trade schools, and labor unions, and 13 at Minority-Serving Institutions. These BTAC awardees join an expanded network of Industrial Training and Assessment Centers (ITACs), collectively working across 25 states to deliver practical skills, career pathways, and real-world energy savings.

AEE is proud to support colleges and universities awarded BTAC funding by providing access to our industry-leading training programs and certifications. Through partnerships with institutions such as the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and the University of Miami, BTAC funds are helping students and professionals earn credentials like the Certified Energy Manager® (CEM®) and Energy Efficiency Practitioner (EEP™).

With the launch of AEE’s Academic Membership and Energy Training Partner (ETP) model, we’re making it even easier for schools to connect with our network, access discounted training, and prepare their students for success in the clean energy workforce. As more institutions leverage BTAC funding, AEE is ready to help them turn that investment into measurable skills, stronger career opportunities, and a more sustainable future.
