AEE Launches 3D Field Simulation Exam for Home Energy Auditor Certification

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) is proud to announce the pilot launch of the Field Simulation Exam for the U.S. Department of Energy Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor (HEP EA) certification, a groundbreaking step forward in how residential energy professionals are assessed.

This is AEE’s first interactive 3D simulation exam, and pilot applications are now open to U.S. participants. Best of all: the pilot exam is free of charge.

What Makes This Different

Traditional field assessments for energy auditor certifications require candidates to travel to a physical location for hands-on evaluation. AEE’s simulation exam changes that.

Candidates navigate a fully immersive, interactive 3D virtual home, walking through rooms, selecting and using diagnostic tools, opening doors, and interacting with appliances and systems, all from their own computer. The remote-proctored exam evaluates whether candidates can perform real-world energy auditing tasks with accuracy and sound judgment, without the logistical barriers of an in-person exam site.

How the 3D Energy Auditor Simulation Exam Works

The simulation platform is built to mirror the tasks an energy auditor performs in the field. Candidates use a virtual toolbox, navigate between floors and rooms, and complete tasks recorded on an in-simulation clipboard, all within a 4-hour exam window

Tasks assessed include:

  • Preparing safety instruments for use
  • Measuring indoor air and combustion appliance carbon monoxide levels
  • Conducting building diagnostic tests, including blower door testing

The exam includes four gated items that must each be completed successfully to pass, regardless of overall score, reinforcing real-world competency. See the Field Guide for a full list of tasks.

To support candidate success, all candidates are expected to complete the following prior to their scheduled assessment:

  1.  Review the Simulation Navigation Guide
  2. Take the Practice Simulation Exam

Once a candidate application has been reviewed and approved, access to these resources will be provided. The guide and practice exam allow candidates to become familiar with the virtual testing environment, system functionality, and navigation tools, helping them focus on demonstrating their knowledge and skills on exam day rather than learning the platform.

About the Home Energy Professional Certifications

AEE has been designated as a certification body for two nationally recognized credentials under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP):

  • Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor (EA)
  • Quality Control Inspector (QCI)

The EA is an experienced professional who evaluates the potential health and safety issues, durability, comfort, and energy use of a residential building. The EA conducts advanced diagnostic tests, gathers and analyzes data, and creates energy models to draw conclusions and make recommendations for improvements.

To earn the EA certification, candidates must meet prerequisite requirements and pass:

  1. A 100-question multiple-choice written exam
  2. The computer simulation field exam

A QCI is a residential energy efficiency expert who reviews, inspects, and verifies the appropriateness, quality, and completion of energy retrofit work by conducting site visits, performing diagnostic testing, and evaluating work practices and documentation to improve the indoor environment, safety, durability, comfort, and energy efficiency of the building for the client.

To earn the QCI certification, candidates must meet prerequisite requirements and pass a 50-question multiple choice exam.

HEP EA vs. Certified Energy Auditor (CEA)

The EA certification is different from AEE’s Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), which focuses on commercial buildings and industrial facilities. The EA is specifically tailored to the residential sector.

Why It Matters

The Weatherization Assistance Program has delivered weatherization services to approximately 30,000 homes annually since 1976, helping more than 7 million families achieve safer, more affordable living conditions. The program supports over 8,500 jobs nationwide and is built on a foundation of quality workforce credentials.

AEE, which has 32,000 active certifications globally, brings that same commitment to excellence to the residential sector. These credentials validate expertise that directly impacts low-income families, helping them save energy costs and improve their home environments.
