Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional
AEE's Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP) program is designed to provide recognition for professionals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field of lighting efficiency. The designation CLEP identifies individuals who have demonstrated high levels of experience, competence, proficiency, and ethical fitness, bringing to their professional activities the full scope of knowledge requisite to the development and implementation of effective lighting efficiency solutions within the commercial, industrial, institutional and governmental market sectors.

AEE & NALMCO Offer Reciprocal Lighting Certification
AEE and the interNational Association of Lighting Management Companies® (NALMCO) are pleased to announce their respective lighting certifications allow for cross-over/reciprocal designation. AEE and NALMCO have a long history of serving the needs of the lighting industry. These programs cover core lighting concepts and technologies putting lighting professionals at the forefront of the industry. Once you earn one of these designations, you may apply for the other organization's certification without taking another exam. If you are a current CLEP, you can earn the CLMC designation without taking an additional exam.
- To raise the professional standards of those engaged in lighting efficiency.
- To improve the practice of lighting efficiency by encouraging professionals in a continuing education program of professional development related to lighting.
- To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of lighting efficiency through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
- To award special recognition to those professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for lighting efficiency.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
|4-year engineering or architectural degree OR
Professional Engineer (PE), Registered Architect (RA)
|AND||3+ years related* experience|
|4-year degree in business (or related field)||AND||5+ years related* experience|
|2-year associate degree||AND||5+ years related* experience|
|NONE||10+ years related* experience|
|Current Status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)||AND||3+ years related* experience|
*Related experience in lighting efficiency.
If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CLEP-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CLEP preparatory training seminar, submit the CLEPIT certification application, and pass the CLEP certification examination. The CLEP-IT certification is valid for three years, which allows you time to meet the full CLEP certification eligibility requirements.
CLEP/CLMC Reciprocal Certification
AEE and NALMCO have partnered to allow their respective lighting certifications – the Certified Lighting Energy Professional (CLEP) and the Certified Lighting Management Consultant® (CLMC®) to qualify for cross-over/reciprocal certification. NALMCO and the AEE have a long history of serving the needs of the lighting industry. These certification programs cover core lighting concepts and technologies that place lighting professionals at the forefront of the industry. Once you earn one of these designations (either the CLMC from NALMCO or the CLEP from AEE), you may apply for the other organization’s certification credential without taking another exam. Complete the Application for CLMC or CLEP Reciprocal Certification and submit with your CLEP certificate or CLMC letter and application fee. Once your certification has been verified, the reciprocal certification will be conferred upon you.
All CLEP candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory CLEP training seminars, submit a CLEP certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.
The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.
