EA Certification

An Energy Auditor (EA) is an experienced professional who evaluates the potential health and safety issues, durability, comfort, and energy use of a residential building. An EA conducts advanced diagnostic tests, gathers and analyzes data, and creates energy models to draw conclusions and make recommendations for improvements.

To earn the Home Energy Professionals Single-Family Energy Auditor certification, candidates must meet prerequisite requirements and pass a 100-question multiple-choice written exam in addition to passing the computer simulation field exam.

ISTOCK OK 3

While traditional programs require candidates to visit a physical location for practical assessment, AEE offers an exclusive alternative. Our simulation exam takes place in a fully immersive virtual environment, allowing candidates to walk through a candidates to walk through a virtual home, identify energy inefficiencies, while demonstrating their ability collect relevant information and conduct diagnostic tests—all from the convenience of their own space.

ملحوظة:  The EA certification is different from AEE’s مدقق الطاقة المعتمد (CEA), which focuses on commercial and industrial facilities. EA is tailored to the residential sector, particularly under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).

Prerequisites

All items below are required prior to taking the written and/or field certification exams:

Building trades experience (e.g., framing, roofing, drywall, siding) 10 5 points for each 1,000 hours
Training from industry-specific training center (training whose content aligns with the content of the JTA for the certification) 10 5 points for every 40 hours
Related industry certifications (e.g., RESNET, Building Performance Institute, North American Technician Excellence, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ASHRAE, Association of Energy Engineers). Other certifications also considered 10 5 points per certification

*No activities allow a higher score than 20 points.

This structure separates practical experience from professional development

Energy Modeling

In the past 5 years, all certification candidates must meet the energy modeling requirements below:

Questions assess knowledge and skills based on the certification content outline. The exam is closed book and must be taken in a quiet, secure environment that meets remote proctoring requirements.

Field Simulation Exam

The remote-proctored simulation exam assesses key tasks performed by energy auditors, based on the Field Guide. This virtual exam includes four gated items that must all be completed successfully to pass, regardless of the overall score.

Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete the exam, which evaluates skills such as:

  • Preparing and using gas and carbon monoxide instruments
  • Testing indoor air for carbon monoxide and taking appropriate actions
  • Ensuring combustion appliances are disabled during blower door testing
