How to Earn Renewal Credits to Keep Your Certification Current
Earning your AEE certification is a significant achievement, but maintaining it is just as important. To keep your credential active, every certified professional must earn 10 renewal credits each three-year renewal cycle through Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or AEE Credits.
When Do You Need to Renew?
The renewal cycle starts January 1st or July 1st. Renewal credits must be accumulated during the three-year period leading up to that date. Keep in mind that the training program you completed to earn your certification does not count toward renewal credits, but all credits accumulated after you became officially certified will qualify as long as the topics are related to the Body of the Knowledge of the certification you are renewing.
AEE does not track your continuing education on your behalf. You are responsible for maintaining your own records and submitting a completed recertification form at the time of renewal. All renewals are subject to a 30-day processing period.
10 Ways to Earn Renewal Credits Through AEE
AEE makes it easy to accumulate your 10 credits through activities you may already be participating in:
1. Become a Member of AEE (membership credits do not apply to CEA certification renewal)
2. Take an AEE Training Course
3. Attend an AEE Member Webinar
4. Volunteer for a Leadership Role at AEE
5. Publish an Article in an AEE Journal
6. Receive an AEE Award
7. Attend AEE Conferences
8. Speak at an AEE Conference
9. Host an AEE Member Webinar
10. Attend a Local AEE Chapter Meeting
Credits can also be earned through qualifying external continuing education providers, including accredited colleges and universities, professional engineering associations, energy and sustainability organizations, and accredited nonprofit or corporate continuing education programs.
What to Keep in Your Records
When documenting your renewal activities, be sure to capture the following for each:
– Sponsoring organization
– Course name and brief description of content and/or skills assessments
– Location
– Date and duration of the activity
– Instructor, speaker, or facilitator name
– Number of CEUs or PDHs earned
A Certificate of Participation from your course provider that shows the event attended, date, location, and credits awarded is the standard supporting document.
