What Does it Really Mean to be Net Zero?

On this episode of Full of Energy, Raoul Empey from Sustineo and Ally Duncan from Stok cut through the jargon and explore the differences between “net zero” and “carbon neutral.” We also investigate why companies are making the bold pledge to go net zero, and whether carbon credits truly make a difference. We’ll address the burning question of whether companies are genuinely walking the green talk or engaging in greenwashing. And, of course, we’ll take a look at the prospects of meeting our 2030 sustainability goals.

Raoul is Director of Sustineo, a leading Irish sustainability consultancy that provides solutions for businesses to reduce the impact they have on the environment. Sustineo does sustainability in 3 steps (measure, optimise, restore), aiming to help businesses increase profitability while doing something good for society and the living world. Sustineo specialises in climate action, carbon and energy management, and also assists businesses with restorative projects such as planting native woodlands in Ireland. As a certified trainer, Raoul has designed, developed and delivered highly successful courses such as Energy Basics and Carbon Basics delivered to over 2,000 participants on behalf of the national energy agency, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).  He also delivers Climate Action workshops and webinars on topics such as net zero targets and carbon offsets. Raoul is a Climate Reality Leader, having been personally trained by former US Vice President Al Gore in the communication of climate change. He is also a Certified Energy Manager with the Association of Energy Engineers (CEM) and a Chartered Engineer with Engineers Ireland (CEng).

Ally Duncan, LEED AP BD+C and CBCP (Certified Building Commissioning Professional), is an MBCx Engineering Project Manager at Stok. Having uniquely worked as owner, engineer, and niche energy consultant, Ally combines over a decade of broad energy and sustainability experience specializing in commissioning, energy related data analysis, and building decarbonization strategies to comprehensively support clients in achieving the newest climate mandate: rapidly decarbonizing the built environment. She is passionate about building a rapport with the owner and all project stakeholders to successfully implement the monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) and measurement and verification (M&V) services needed to ensure that projects continue to operate as intended. She is an expert at scaling environmental impact from the building level to portfolio scale for public and private entities and has experience on a breadth of project types and depth on complex system types. For her leadership and accomplishments in engineering, Ally was named a 2023 Woman of Influence in Engineering by the San Diego Business Journal.
