Case Study – Another Successful Thermal Energy Storage Project
By: Guy Frankenfield, Energy Market Manager, DN Tanks, Inc.
Scheduled Speaker at 2020 AEE East Energy Conference & Expo
Wednesday, April 29, 2020 | 2:00-3:00pm (EDT)
Compared to other types of grid scale Energy Storage systems (like batteries, flywheels, and pumped hydro), chilled water Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is lower in first cost, higher in efficiency, longer in useful life, requiring virtually no maintenance, and with no negative environmental impacts. TES systems have evolved over the past four decades and are widely considered a proven and reliable technology with benefits that include; energy storage, load shifting, demand response, capital avoidance, mission critical back-up, and maximizing power output of gas turbines.
This presentation will feature a Case Study of the 1.67-million-gallon chilled water TES tank that was recently added to Miami University of Ohio’s district cooling system. Information will be provided regarding the financial benefits of TES tanks, and some of the design considerations. Specifics about the results of the Miami University project will be shared including the electric load shift, the economic benefits of the TES tank, along with internal and external challenges of the project. This presentation will benefit Energy Managers, Facilities Planners, Engineers, and Architects.
