Microgrids are being deployed throughout the world. Many energy engineers consider them to embody the future of electrical energy delivery systems. The International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that to achieve the goal of universal access to electricity, most rural areas that currently lack access will need to be connected using mini-grid or off-grid solutions. Urban areas will deploy microgrids in the future to achieve cost reduction, energy resiliency and to incorporate electrical generation using alternative and renewable forms of energy. Microgrids, when properly configured, can provide sustainable energy solutions to help meet needs for improved services and energy resiliency.
In this webinar, Dr. Stephen A. Roosa de-mystifies the subject of microgrids by providing an overview of their applications and technologies. He briefly covers microgrid definitions, stand-alone power systems, and drivers for microgrid use. He discusses microgrid definitions, components, configurations, differences between central and distributed electrical generation systems, use of AC and DC microgrids, and opportunities for solar and energy storage applications. He also clarifies applications for various types of microgrids and offers a few case examples.
