Russell Koehler - 2018 Hall of Fame Inductee

Russ Koehler graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with a BS in Marine Engineering in 1976. He immediately traveled to CA., to start his energy management career working with his Dad at Northridge Hospital as a Lead Energy Engineer.  Russ learned energy management and innovation while working at Northridge Hospital and part time with American Energy Savings, Inc., with his Dad, and brother Douglas.  In 1979 Russ and Douglas took over the operations of American Energy Savings, Inc. and in 1980 became two of the first CA State Certified Energy Auditors, sanctioned by the California Energy Commission. In the same year Russ, Douglas, and American Energy Savings joined the AEE.

Russ achieved his CEM around 1994 (#2517) and became a Life Member of AEE in 1999.  In 2005, Russ joined Amgen, Inc., as a Senior Engineer and was immediately made Chairman of Amgen’s Energy Team. He was promoted to Principal Engineer, as Energy Manager for four R&D facilities throughout North America, and greatly assisted Amgen in winning two AEE International Energy Awards, 1) Energy Program of the Year Award in 2014, and the Energy Project of the Year in 2017 for the Smart and Integrated Facilities (SaIF) program which was co-developed by Russ and a colleague and was brainstormed in 2012 at the Atlanta WEEC.

Russ made a promise to Al and Ruth in 2014 that when he retired from Amgen and moved to Hawaii that he would join and help the AEE Hawaii Chapter. He moved to Hawaii in July of 2017, attended his 1st meeting in November, and was elected President in January of 2018. More to come.
