Jon Feldman – 2020 Hall of Fame Inductee

Jon Feldman is the Senior Technical Officer for Industrial Energy Efficiency in the IESO’s Energy Efficiency department, which delivers energy efficiency incentive programs to Ontario’s electricity users. In this role, Jon is responsible for all technical aspects of the programs including managing the technical review process for large custom applications submitted to the industrial program. He is specifically responsible for providing guidance, leadership and direction to a service provider with a team of engineers who delivers the technical review function on behalf of the IESO. He also provides leadership and guidance on industrial energy efficiency measures, energy management, Strategic Energy Management and ISO 50001, to the Energy Efficiency department.  As part of his role at the IESO, Jon has overseen technical approval of over $70 million (CAD) of incentives for projects currently in service, representing 600,000 MWh of measured and verified energy savings.

Jon also led the innovative use of IPMVP Option D for assessment of savings from major new construction industrial projects including mine ventilation, compressed air and industrial refrigeration.

In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Jon was co-chair of ACEEE’s 2019 Summer Study on Industrial Energy Efficiency and in 2018-19 he chaired the DSM program team of the Centre for Energy Advancement through Technological Innovation (CEATI). He is the IESO voting member on the ISO TC301 Mirror Committee (ISO 50001 family).

During the period 1997-2009 Mr. Feldman was a consultant for Hatch Ltd, a leading global consulting engineering and management organization serving mining and energy sectors. During this time, he conducted approximately 100 energy audits and energy management assessments at a broad range of commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.

Jon currently serves as a member of AEE’s CMVP Board and is a charter member of AEE’s ISO 50001 Certification Board. He has been a member of the Greater Toronto Area Chapter executive since 2012, serving as president from 2018-2020. He was the recipient of the AEE Canada Regional Award for Energy Professional Development in 2016, and is a regular contributor to the AEE World Conference as both a session chair and presenter.

Jon holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He holds the CEM, CEA and CMVP designations, is a former CMVP Instructor, and is the longest serving instructor on the Canadian CEM panel, having taught close to 50 classes and over 1,200 students. In 2019 Jon was admitted as a Fellow of the Association of Energy Engineers.

On a personal note, he has recently re-ignited his enthusiasm for photography and has several of his images hanging on the walls of the IESO’s two main locations, and also had 5 of his images selected for display at the annual “Capture Oakville” competition.
