The Energy Manager In Training (EMIT) designation is for the many talented energy professionals out there, that can demonstrate technical strengths by passing the Certified Energy Manager® (CEM®) test but do not have the necessary credentials to apply for full CEM status. Earning the In Training designation is the quickest pathway towards obtaining full certification and establishing peer recognition today.
- To raise the professional standards of those engaged in energy management
- To improve the practice of energy management by encouraging energy managers in a continuing program of professional development
- To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy management related disciplines and laws governing and affecting energy managers through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct
- To award special recognition to those energy managers who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for energy management
The prerequisites to qualify for the certification process have been designed to take into account the possible diversity of education and practical experience an individual may have. However each EMIT candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
4-year degree in engineering or architecture
OR Professional Engineer or Registered Architect
||Less than 3 years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
|4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science
||Less than 4 years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
|4-year degree in business (or a related field)
||Less than 5 years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
|2-year energy management associate's degree
||Less than 6 years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
|2-year technical associate's degree
||A minimum of 2 years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
||4 years or more of experience in energy engineering or energy management
Candidates who are interested should complete a short EMIT application form and take one of the required scheduled seminar dates listed below, followed by the CEM exam.
Upon successfully passing the test, the EMIT board will review and approve the candidate's file. Then the candidate will be mailed a certificate showing that they are an EMIT. This certificate will show the EMIT is good for six years. After the candidate fulfills the required energy management experience, it' the candidate's responsibility to then submit the CEM application and all supporting documents. After all CEM application items are received, the CEM board will review and approve the candidate's file and issue the CEM certification. No further exam is required. If the candidate does not meet requirements in that time, the EMIT designation will be dropped.
All candidates taking the CEM exam in the United States (only) will take the revised format CEM Certification Exam. The new format exam contains the same number of questions as previous versions, 130, and the exam duration will remain 4 hours. The new exam will not include optional sections, as in the past; rather, the exam will include questions from all 17 sections of the CEM Body of Knowledge. This differs from the international version of the CEM exam, which will still contain optional sections. You must bring a hand calculator to the exam since the CEM test does not allow computers, tablets or cell phones to be used for calculations on the test.
An intensive jobs task analysis was performed for the CEM and a weighted percentage of topics was developed for the CEM Body of Knowledge. Although a specific number of exam questions for each topic will not be provided, as it may change, the number of questions on the exam will align with the content percentages listed in the following CEM Body of Knowledge.
Enrichment Training for Seminar Preparation
