Certification Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

Helen Johnson, Francine Seskin & Michelle Zakin

We have found that when AEE introduces new certification programs like the Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP), the Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), the Business Energy Professional (BEP) or the Certified Energy Auditor™ (CEA®) many questions are raised. As you go through the certification process, you will discover there are many details that need to be addressed before, during, and after the examination process. We hope that you will find this new segment both helpful and enlightening.

Our Certification Directors have come up with a list of commonly asked questions and provided the answers.

Question 1:
Is there any flexibility in the 6-week certification exam application deadline?
Yes, the deadline date is flexible. Contact the Certification Director responsible for your exam for assistance.

Question 2:

Yes. When you arrive at the exam site you will need to sign a waiver and pay the required test fee. No scores will be handed out until the application and fee are in the AEE office.

Question 3:
Can I take the exam without taking the course?
No. As of July 1, 2009, all certifications require mandatory training prior to examinations.

Question 4:
How long do I have to complete my certification application after taking the exam?
If a candidate has failed to acquire sufficient points to be recommended for the certification for which they are applying, the candidate may be re-examined at a subsequent examination period and/or resubmit an updated application at a later date. Applicants have 3 years to follow up and complete their certification application; after 3 years, applicants must resubmit the application and retake the CEM exam.
