Overview

Each certified professional is required to obtain Professional Development Hours (PDH) and continued work experience each renewal period.  AEE does not maintain a record of your continuing education in the interim. You must maintain record of continuing education and complete a recertification form at the time of your renewal.  You will reach your recertification date on the fourth January 1st following the date of certification.  Professional credits for recertification should be accumulated during the three-year renewal period for 50001 CP EnMS and 50001 LA or five-year period for SEP PV for each renewal cycle.  The seminar taken to acquire your certification does not apply towards your renewal credits. *All certification renewals are subject to 30-day renewal processing. 

Requirements for 50001 CP EnMS Certification Renewal

The 50001 CP EnMS recertification is valid for three (3) years from the date of certification. Certified professionals must meet the recertification requirements, which are:

  1. Adhering to the 50001 CP EnMS Code of Ethics.
  2. Completing Continuing Professional Development requirements.
  3. Submitting payment of required fees and verifying contact information.
  4. Remaining current with any changes to normative references that may impact the 50001 CP EnMS Scheme.

The certification holder must complete a minimum of 30 PDHs. Activity must be relevant to topics related to the exam content outline as described in the 50001 CP EnMS Body of Knowledge. Activity must be started after the certification is attained and completed before the end of recertification voluntary lapse period.

Accordingly continuing education credit will be awarded for participation in activities that are energy industry-related.

Continuing Work Experience

The certification holder must complete a minimum of 350 hours of work relating to energy management during the period of certification. Work hours must be logged after the certification is attained and completed before the end of recertification voluntary lapse period.

Work and/or research encompassing energy management such as ISO 50001, energy management business processes, energy efficiency, and associated emerging technologies / processes; Auditing as a member of an ISO 50001 audit team

Fees

The recertification renewal fee is $300.00 paid at time of recertification.

ISO 50001 Standard Changes

The ISO 50001 standard is subject to change and may impact the 50001 CP EnmS certification scheme. As a result, the certified professional is required to remain current with any updates to the 50001 CP EnMS certification. These updates may include a new certification exam or a bridge exam reflecting revisions to the standard or other requirements as defined by the industry.

Requirements for 50001 LA Certification Renewal

The 50001 LA recertification is valid for three (3) years from the date of certification. Certified professionals must meet the recertification requirements, which are:

  1. Adhering to ISO 50001 LA Code of Ethics.
  2. Completing Continuing Professional Development requirements.
  3. Submitting payment of required fees and verifying contact information.
  4. Remaining current with any changes to normative references that may impact the scheme.

The certification holder must complete a minimum of 10 PDHs. Activity must be relevant to topics related to the exam content outline as described in the 50001 LA Body of Knowledge. Activity must be started after the certification is attained and completed before the end of recertification voluntary lapse period.

Continuing Work Experience

During the three-year recertification interval, evidence must be submitted verifying that the certified professional has achieved a minimum of 15 ISO 50001 Audit Days, of which 5 audit days must be in the role of Lead Auditor. Qualifying audit days must be started after the EPI Lead Auditor certification is attained and completed before the end of recertification voluntary lapse. Audit days are documented on an audit log submitted at the time of recertification.

Requirements for SEP PV Certification Renewal

The SEP Performance Verifier recertification is valid for five (5) years from the date of certification. Certified professionals must meet the recertification requirements, which are:

  • Adhering to SEP PV Code of Ethics.
  • Maintaining the 50001 CP EnMS certification.
  • Fulfilling the skills requirement.
  • Receiving payment of required fees and verifying contact information.
  • Remaining current with any changes to normative references that may impact the SEP Performance Verifier Scheme.

Maintain 50001 CP EnMS Certification

To retain the SEP Performance Verifier certification the certified professional is required to have an active 50001 EnMS Certified Practitioner certification.

Skills Requirement

Certified professionals are required to complete either a minimum of two (2) SEP performance verification engagements throughout the five year recertification cycle OR complete the most recent SEP Program Online Training Module and Knowledge checks . The engagements may apply to the development, implementation or auditing of a valid SEP model in accordance with the SEP M & V Protocol.

Course Providers

The course provider shall be an accredited college or university, professional engineering, energy and sustainability association, nonprofit organization or continuing education department of an organization which meets the following:

Awards Continuing Education Units (CEU) to students who have completed a Learning Event. A Learning Event shall have clear objectives, include evaluation at the conclusion and incorporate review into learning activity improvements
Provider must maintain a list of all instructors, including qualifications
Provider must keep a permanent record of attendees, including course name, brief content, location, date of activity, duration, and number of CEU or PDH awarded
Each attendee shall be provided with a Certificate of Participation indicating Learning Event attended, date, location, and CEU or PDH awarded

For Course Providers

The AEE Certification board will not pre-approve courses or course providers.  It is requested that course providers present certified professionals with the above information needed for documentation as proof of continuing education.  The decision of what course or activity is to be submitted AEE for credit is up to the judgment of the certified professional.  Continuing education which enhances the professional attribute of the certified professional and is beneficial in an area of practice will be considered by the Board for those who are audited.  If chosen for audit in a random selection, the certified professional will be expected to provide proof of documentation for the CEUs /and or PDH claimed.  Relevant courses presented by an accredited university or college or nonprofit organization are generally accepted for credit.
