What do you do when the fruit from the low-hanging fruit tree has been picked? You turn to your hands, eyes and ears of energy management, your employees.

In 2013, New Afton Mine became the first mine in North America to achieve ISO 50001 certification. Since then, the mine has implemented energy performance improvement initiatives in excess of 31 GWh annually, approximately 10% of its annual energy consumption. With the majority of the big, “easy to do” projects completed, what could be done to further improve energy performance, without major capital costs? With this question in mind, New Afton Mine decided to set a target to achieve 50% of its 2019 energy savings objective through the implementation of employee and contractor suggestions.

This quick-paced presentation of the case study covers:

  • The reasons behind the initiative,
  • The process of gathering and analyzing suggestions,
  • Exercises to generate suggestions,
  • The employee awareness communications, and
  • The results thus far.

At the end of the day, it’s people, not systems, who manage energy.
