Georgia Tech’s new Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design (KBISD) complies to one of the most stringent and avant-garde building standards – the Living Building Challenge 3.1. This building, now live in 2020, is net positive for energy and for water via a 330 kW PV system and 50,000 gallon reservoir. Even without the extensive PV system, the building ranks as one of the most energy buildings in the south-east. High performance building modeling, astute engineering design, elaborate yet simple HVAC system design, and water management features form the landscape of this new Georgia Tech building. How was this achieved for this building and what does it mean for the built environment going forward?

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the Living Building Standard
  • Appreciate the unique high performance features as applied to the KBISD
  • Understand the PV + ESS system design and the multi-year analysis required
  • Identify basic concepts in whole building energy modeling including input development
  • Understand the roles of energy efficiency and renewable energy in net positive energy performance
  • Identify tools, techniques, and methodologies related to energy simulation in buildings
