New AEE Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) Program Debuts on the Isle of Cyprus
CORE International, Inc., under contract to USAID, is implementing the Resource Efficiency Achievement Project (REA), in the country of Cyprus . The aim of the project is to help businesses use energy and water more efficiently. The project will help firms reduce their costs and become more competitive, as well as conserve the island's scarce water and energy resources. In the pilot phase, the REAP project selected nine firms for assistance. The initial step was to assess how energy and water is used. Trained engineers performed 10 “Energy and Water Use Audits,” which identified a variety of ways to conserve scarce resources and save money.
The REAP project has successfully trained representatives of eight energy services companies, or ESCOs, to undertake energy and water use audits. Classroom training consisted of a three day course in February and a five day course in May. Between the courses the CEA candidates performed the 10 actual audits. These ESCOs will soon be able to deliver audits on a commercial basis.
On Tuesday, May 16 th the Ambassador of the United States to Cyprus , Ronald Schlicher, presented the first Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) certificates to the ESCO engineers at the Chamber of Electrical Engineers in Nicosia , Cyprus . This credential was granted by the Association of Energy Engineers, following the results of the intense training course and exam.

Why Become Certified?
Since 1981 AEE has certified more than 7,000 professionals, enabling them to receive special recognition for their expertise in a variety of specialized areas of the energy industry. AEE's certification programs are recognized by such government agencies as the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Agency for International Development, as well as by corporations, utilities and energy service companies. When you earn your certification credential, you are distinguishing yourself among colleagues in your field, and demonstrating high levels of experience, competence and specialized knowledge.
What certifications does AEE offer?
In the face of increasing demands for specialization within today's businesses and industries, certification can help individuals meet those requirements. The Association of Energy Engineers presently offers thirteen certification programs:
CERTIFIED ENERGY MANAGER® (CEM®) program is broad-based and emphasizes the technical aspects of what energy managers in government and the private sector need to know. The CEM represents a Whos Who in energy management. Since 1982, more than 6,400 individuals have gained the status of CEM.
The ENERGY MANAGER IN TRAINING (EMIT) designation is for the many talented energy professionals out there, that can demonstrate technical strengths by passing the CEM test but do not have the necessary credentials. Candidates must have a degree in engineering or architecture with less than three years in the field. Candidates are required to pass the CEM exam.
CERTIFIED BUSINESS ENERGY PROFESSIONAL (BEP) program awards special recognition to those business/marketing and energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for business/marketing and energy management related disciplines, as well as laws governing and affecting energy professionals.
CERTIFIED LIGHTING EFFICIENCY PROFESSIONAL (CLEP) program was developed to identify specialists in lighting efficiency. This program is also recognized as meeting the certification requirements of the EPA Green Lights Lighting Management Company Ally Program.
CERTIFIED INDOOR AIR QUALITY PROFESSIONAL® (CIAQP®) programis designed to meet the growing needs of businesses to identify qualified indoor air quality practitioners who are equipped to solve problems created by sick buildings, as well as facility managers who are responsible for operating healthy buildings while maintaining comfort and reducing energy costs.
CERTIFIED POWER QUALITY PROFESSIONAL® (CPQ®) program demonstrates the interactions between the power source and sensitive loads in the field of power quality and reliability.
CERTIFIED GEOEXCHANGE DESIGNER® (CGD®) program is designed to recognize professionals who have demonstrated high levels of experience, competence, proficiency, and ethical fitness in applying the principles and practices of geothermal heat pump design and related disciplines. The CGD certification is granted by the Association of Energy Engineers and sponsored by the Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium® (GHPC). Associated training programs are presented by the
International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA).
CERTIFIED ENERGY PROCUREMENT PROFESSIONAL® (CEP®) program covers the acquisition of both electricity and natural gas from both the purchasing/ procurement and selling/marketing perspectives.
DISTRIBUTED GENERATION CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL® (DGCP®) program identifies individuals who have demonstrated high levels of experience, competence, proficiency, and ethical fitness, bringing to their professional activities the full scope of knowledge essential to the effective development and management of todays distributed generation projects.
CERTIFIED MEASUREMENT & VERIFICATION PROFESSIONAL® (CMVP®) program was established by the Association of Energy Engineers in cooperation with the International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol (IPMVP), with the dual purpose of recognizing the most qualified professionals in this growing area of the energy industry, as well as raising overall professional standards within the measurement and verification field.
CERTIFIED BUILDING COMMISSIONING PROFESSIONAL® (CBCP®) program was developed with the dual purpose of recognizing the most highly qualified professionals in this rapidly expanding area within the industry, while raising overall professional standards in the building commissioning field.
The Certified Green Building Engineer (GBE™) program awards special recognition to those green building, design and construction engineering professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for green building related disciplines, as well as laws governing and affecting green building professionals.
