Certified Water Efficiency Professional

The Certified Water Efficiency Professional (CWEP) program is designed to help educate and qualify individuals in the water/energy management field on best practices for improving water efficiency. By obtaining the CWEP Certification, candidates will gain industry and peer recognition by demonstrating their understanding of technical and operational water management principles.


To raise the professional standards of those engaged in water efficiency and energy management.

To improve the practice of water efficiency and energy management by encouraging professionals to partake in a continuing education program of professional development for water efficiency practitioners.

To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of the water efficiency profession through completing the certification and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.

To award special recognition to those energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in water efficiency and energy management.

CWEP Eligibility Requirements
The candidate for CWEP certification must meet one of the following criteria in order to sit for the examination:

2-year Technical degree or 4-year degree from an accredited university or college OR
An individual with at least one year of experience in water efficiency, energy management, or operations and maintenance of a building or facility OR
US Military Veteran OR
Current status of CEM, BEP, or EEP


Examination and Training Requirement
All CWEP candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory CWEP training seminars, and complete and pass CWEP examination which proctored by an AEE approved exam administrator. Attendees have four hours to complete this exam.  Information on seminar training options is provided below.  The examination questions are based on concepts and experiences basic to water efficiency practitioners from recognized texts and supplemental reading.


Fees for the CWEP certification process are as follows:
  • Certification Application and Examination: $300
  • Certification Renewal: $300 every three years

These fees must be paid at the time the CWEP application and the seminar registration are submitted. No application or examination fee refunds are allowed.  

How to Apply for CWEP Certification

Application Deadlines: Your completed application must be received by the Certification Administrator 3 weeks prior to date of the examination for which you wish to sit in order to guarantee you are pre-registered for the examination.  After this date, you may be required to complete a waiver on-site if your name is not pre-registered


All CWEP candidates are required to complete the CWEP preparatory seminar Fundamentals of Water Efficiency: Strategies for Effective Water Management.

Resources to Help You Prepare for CWEP

These webinars serve as building blocks in working towards gaining your CWEP certification.

This free webinar by FEMP provides details on a five-step process for conducting (or managing the conduct of) a comprehensive water assessment, including developing a water balance, conducting a walkthrough survey, developing water conservation measures, and long-range plans for water efficiency.  Although developed for governmental facility managers, this course has a lot of useful information for the private sector.

This free webinar by FEMP provides facility and energy managers with knowledge and skills to assist in meeting water-related legislative and executive order requirements.
