The Master's Level Certified
Energy Auditor (CEAM) Program

 
 
 


New for 2012 and developed with grant funding from the US Department of Energy, the Master’s Level Certified Energy Auditor (MCEA) certification is designed to reach beyond the typical equipment replacements and develop a plan which considers additional areas of energy such as indoor air quality, code compliance, operation and maintenance, risk mitigation, commissioning, and investment grade details.

 

Objectives

To raise the professional standards of those engaged in energy auditing.

To improve the practice of energy auditors by encouraging energy auditing in a continuing education program of professional development.

To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy auditing through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.

To award special recognition to those energy auditing professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in energy auditing.

 

Master's Level CEA Eligibility Requirements
 

Applicant must meet one of the following qualification criteria:

Certification/Training   Experience
AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM) AND 3+ years of verifiable experience in commercial and/or industrial energy auditing
AEE Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) AND 3+ years of verifiable experience in commercial and/or industrial energy auditing
ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) AND 3+ years of verifiable experience in commercial and/or industrial energy auditing
BPI Multifamily Building Analyst AND 3+ years of verifiable experience in commercial and/or industrial energy auditing
N/A   8+ years of verifiable experience in commercial and/or industrial energy auditing
*All applicants must also achieve a passing score on the CEA Masters Level certification exam.

Examination and Training Requirement

All Master’s level CEA candidates must attend the Advanced Energy Auditing preparatory training seminar, and complete and pass the four-hour written Master’s Level CEA examination, proctored by an AEE-approved exam administrator. Information on seminar training options is provided below. Master’s Level CEA examination questions are drawn from areas of knowledge such as ASHRAE Type I and II Audits, Investment Grade Audits, Auditing Tools and Software, and Retro-Commissioning.

The exam is open book, and questions are a mixture of multiple choice and true/false. A passing score of at least 70% is required in conjunction with meeting all other eligibility requirements to become certified.


Fees
The fee for the Master's Level CEA certification process are as follows:
  • Certification application and examination: $300  exam fee (not included in cost of seminar)
  • Seminar Registration:
    • $1,695 for AEE members / government / nonprofit; $1,895 for non-AEE members
  • Certification Renewal
    • $300 every three years 
This fee must be paid at the time the Master's Level CEA application and the seminar registration are submitted.

How to Apply for Master's Level CEA Certification

 

Application Deadlines: Your completed application must be received by the Certification Administrator 3 weeks prior to date of the examination for which you wish to sit in order to guarantee you are pre-registered for the examination.  After this date, you may be required to complete a waiver on-site if your name is not pre-registered.

All Master’s Level CEA candidates are required to complete the 4-day live Advanced Energy Auditing training program at one of its scheduled locations.

The CEA exam is administered at each Advanced Energy Auditing seminar site, on the afternoon of the last day of the seminar.
