The Master's Level Certified Building
Commissioning Professional (CBCPM) Program

 
 
 


New for 2012 and developed with grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Master’s Level Certified Building Commissioning Professional (MCBCP) certification is intended for energy professionals already involved and experienced in building commissioning who want to take their skills and credentials in the field to the next level, including establishing expertise in the use of life cycle building commissioning – integrating the components and practices of commissioning into a single, seamless approach designed to cover the lifetime of use of a building. The MCBCP certification is intended to raise the professional standards of those involved in life cycle building commissioning, and to award special recognition to those professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in the specialized and advanced practice of building commissioning.

 

Objectives

To raise the professional standards of those engaged in life cycle building commissioning.

To improve the practice of building commissioning professionals by encouraging building commissioning practices in a continuing education program of professional development.

To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of building commissioning through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.

To award special recognition to those building commissioning professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in building commissioning.

 

Master's Level CBCP Eligibility Requirements
 

Applicant must have one of the following active certifications:

  • AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • AEE Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP)
  • AEE Existing Building Commissioning Professional (EBCP)
  • NEBB Building Systems Commissioning Certified Professional (BSC)
  • ICB/TABB Commissioning Supervisor Certification
  • ASHRAE Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP)
  • AABC Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA)
  • USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
  • BCA Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP)
  • University of Wisconsin at Madison Accredited Commissioning Process Manager (CxM)

**and**

A minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience in building commissioning and/or retro-commissioning
All applicants must also achieve a passing score on the CBCP Masters Level certification exam.


Examination and Training Requirement

All Master’s level CBCP candidates must attend the Life Cycle Building Commissioning preparatory training seminar, and complete and pass the four-hour written Master’s Level CBCP examination, proctored by an AEE-approved exam administrator. Information on seminar training options is provided below. Master’s Level CBCP examination questions are drawn from areas of knowledge such as life cycle building commissioning, new building commissioning, retro and existing building commissioning, and commissioning software.

The exam is open book, and questions are a mixture of multiple choice and true/false. A passing score of at least 70% is required in conjunction with meeting all other eligibility requirements to become certified.

Fees
The fee for the Master's Level CBCP certification process are as follows:
  • Certification application and examination: $300  exam fee (not included in cost of seminar)
  • Seminar Registration:
    • $1,795 for AEE members / government / nonprofit; $1,995 for non-AEE members
  • Certification Renewal
    • $300 every three years 
This fee must be paid at the time the Master's Level CBCP application and the seminar registration are submitted.

How to Apply for Master's Level CBCP Certification

 

Application Deadlines: Your completed application must be received by the Certification Administrator at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the examination for which you wish to sit.

 

 
 
 
STEP ONE: REGISTER FOR THE AEE MASTER'S LEVEL CBCP SEMINAR

All Master’s Level CBCP candidates are required to complete the 5-day live Advanced Retro Commissioning training program at one of its scheduled locations.

The CBCP exam is administered at each Life Cycle Building Commissioning seminar site, on the afternoon of the last day of the seminar.
