The Renewable Energy Professional (REP™) certification, introduced by AEE in 2010 is designed to recognize the expertise and experience of professionals involved in the specification and application of renewable and alternative energy technologies, assessment of renewable energy projects, and development of achievable low-carbon and sustainability goals for organizations.

Since 1981, AEE has certified thousands of professionals within the energy industry. AEE's certifications are recognized by governmental agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Agency for International Development, as well as by utilities, end users, and energy service companies.

Objectives

  • To raise the professional standards of those engaged in renewable energy.
  • To improve the practice of renewable energy professionals by encouraging renewable energy in a continuing education program of professional development.
  • To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of renewable energy through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
  • To award special recognition to those renewable energy professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in renewable energy.
Eligibility
The candidate must have:
  • 4-year degree in Engineering, Architecture, Science, Business , or related with 2 years of experience in renewable, alternative energy, biomass, biofuel, solar, or related.
OR
  • 2-year technical degree with 5 years of experience in renewable, alternative energy, biomass, biofuel, solar, or related.

OR

  • 10 years of experience in renewable, alternative energy, biomass, biofuel, solar, or related.
OR
  • The current status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®).
  
 
The Required Body of Knowledge
The effective practice of renewable energy in the energy field requires in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of subjects. However, the candidate need only demonstrate to the satisfaction of the certification board the knowledge and ability to apply the essentials of renewable energy.

The REP Examination
To be awarded the REP designation, candidates must attend the preparatory seminar prior to taking the REP exam and receive a pass rate of 70% on the examination. The certification director keeps examination scores on file for a period of three years. Applicants that do not receive certification status can request that their applications be resubmitted to the REP Board, if during that three-year period their education or experience level changes.
The examination will be administered by the Association of Energy Engineers.
The applicant must complete the written exam. The applicant is given four hours to complete the exam. Dates and locations are determined by the REP Board. Candidates are notified of this information by the REP Director. The examination questions are based on concepts and experiences basic to renewable energy on recognized tests, and on supplemental reading. The exam is open book!

Fees
Fees for the REP certification process are as follows:
  • Certification Application and Examination:
    • $300 if exam is taken in conjunction with AEE's 3-day live training seminar
    • $400 if exam is taken in an ACT remote testing center following completion of AEE's realtime online REP training seminar
  • Seminar Registration:
    • Live Seminar Option: $1450 for AEE members / $1550 for non-AEE members
    • Realtime Online Seminar Option: $995 for AEE members / $1095 for non-AEE members
  • Certification Renewal:
    • $300 every three years 

 

 

 How to Apply for REP Certification

Application Deadlines: Your completed application must be received by the Certification Administrator at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the examination for which you wish to sit.


STEP ONE:
REGISTER FOR THE AEE REP TRAINING SEMINAR OF YOUR CHOICE
All REP candidates are required to complete either the 3-day live Fundamentals of Renewable Energy: Technologies, Applications, Strategies training program at one of its scheduled locations, or the web-based seminar, Certified Renewable Energy Professional Preparatory Training Program (12 hours in 6 two-hour online sessions) offered several times each year.

STEP TWO:

The procedure for those wishing to use Testing Option 1 is as follows:
  1. After registering for the live seminar, REP applicant completes the online REP certification application selecting the live exam option under "Testing Location." 
  2. Applicant submits completed online REP application to AEE for review (must be received by AEE at least 3 weeks prior to the exam date).
  3. AEE reviews the application and sends an initial response letter to the applicant, either accepting the application, or requesting additional information if necessary.
  4. Applicant provides any additional information requested to the AEE certification administrator.
  5. Applicant receives verification letter from AEE that all required information has been received, and stating whether certification application has been accepted. (Acceptance of the application is required to sit for the exam.)
  6. Applicant completes the 3-day live seminar and takes the open-book REP exam on the morning of the day following the seminar at the seminar site. (Completing the seminar is required in order to sit for the exam.)
  7. Notification of Exam Results: Applicant will receive a letter from AEE within 30 days of completion of the exam which includes the test score and applicant's status. Please do not call AEE about your test results before the end of the thirty-day period. Exam results are not available on the AEE website.
  8. Review by the Certification Board: If all required references are in place, the application is in order, all fees have been paid, the applicant has met all eligibility requirements and passed the exam, AEE will send the applicant's file to the REP Board for final approval.
     
  9. Receiving Your Certification: The Board approval process usually takes 6-8 weeks. Once the approvals have been sent to AEE from the REP Board, the applicant achieves REP status, and will receive his/her REP Certificate in the mail.

 
The procedure for those wishing to use Testing Option 2 is as follows:
  1. After completing the online training seminar, REP applicant completes the online REP certification application, selecting the remote testing option under "Testing Location."
  2. Applicant submits completed online REP application to AEE for review.
  3. AEE reviews the application and sends an initial response letter to the applicant, either accepting the application, or requesting additional information if necessary.
  4. Upon initial acceptance, AEE sends the applicant's contact information to the main office for remote Testing Centers.

    (To see a testing center locations map, Click Here; however do not contact the testing center directly. You must be approved for testing by applying through AEE first, and then the testing center will contact you upon your acceptance as a REP exam candidate.)
  5. The Remote Testing Center contacts the applicant directly to arrange the testing location, explain the testing procedures and ID required, and provide a testing center password. A two business day notice is required by the remote testing facility to reschedule.  If you do not for any reason give this notice, you will be required to pay the center fee of $70 before you can reschedule.
  6. Applicant takes the open-book REP exam at his/her chosen remote testing center.
  7. Notification of Exam Results: Upon completion of the exam, the applicant will see an INITIAL test score. The results will be sent to AEE by the remote testing center, and the applicant will receive a letter from AEE within 30 days of completion of the exam which includes the OFFICIAL test score and applicant's status. Please do not call AEE about your test results before the end of the thirty-day period. Exam results are not available on the AEE website.
  8. Review by the Certification Board: If all required references are in place, the application is in order, all fees have been paid, the applicant has met all eligibility requirements and passed the exam, AEE will send the applicant's file to the REP Board for final approval.
