We have found that when AEE introduces new certification programs like the Certified Sustainable Development Professional (CSDP), the Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), the Business Energy Professional (BEP) or the Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) many questions are raised. As you go through the certification process, you will discover there are many details that need to be addressed before, during, and after the examination process. We hope that you will find this new segment both helpful and enlightening.
Our Certification Directors have come up with a list of commonly asked questions and provided the answers.
Is there any flexibility in the 6-week certification exam application deadline?
Yes, the deadline date is flexible. Contact the Certification Director responsible for your exam for assistance.
Can I take the test…I haven't filed my application yet?!
Yes. When you arrive at the exam site you will need to sign a waiver and pay the required test fee. No scores will be handed out until the application and fee are in the AEE office.
Can I take the exam without taking the course?
No. As of July 1, 2009, all certifications require mandatory training prior to examinations.
Can exams be taken online?
The following exams can be taken at remote testing centers:
CEM, CRM, CSDP, CLEP,BEP, CEA, CLEP, CGD, CEP, EEP, and REA exams
When does the exam begin and end?
Exam times vary so please review this information carefully!
5-Day BEP Course Exam 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
5-Day CEM Course Exam 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
5-Day CBCP Course Exam 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
2-Day CLEP Course Exam 8:00 am – 12:00 pm (Exam on morning of Day 3)
All other 2-Day Course Exams 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (Exam on morning of Day 3)
All 2.5-Day Course Exams 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Can I get the workbook and reference material prior to the course?
Reference materials not included in the course can be purchased online ( www.aeeprograms.com/books ) or through the book department (call Chris 770-925-9558) prior to the course. Resource materials included with the course are not available until you arrive onsite.
Can we use a calculator during the exam?
Yes! Although cell phone, tablet, etc. calculators are not allowed.
Can I bring my own reference materials or notes?
Yes! Although all materials must be printed and organized in a binder. Computers, tablets, cell phones may not be used on the exam.
When will I get my score on the exam?
You will be notified 30 days after the date you test. Your application fee must be paid before your score can be released.
Can I call AEE for my score?
No, the massive number of phone calls would only slow down the process and result in delays.
Are scores posted on the AEE website ?
No. For security reasons we do not post scores online.
How long will it take to receive Board approval ?
After you have achieved a passing score on the exam, have paid the application fee, and your file is complete, including all supporting documents, your file will be submitted to the Certification Board for final review. At the time of submittal to the Board, you will be notified that you may expect to learn the Board's approval or denial within sixty days.
How long is my certification in effect?
All certifications are in effect for 3 years and are then subject to renewal requirements to maintain. Maintenance Requirements are listed at www.aeecenter.org/certification , click on logo for specific program needed.
What companies or organizations recognize AEE certifications?
Utilities, major real estate management companies, government agencies, manufacturers, engineering and architectural firms
Why should I get certified?
• Certification is part of total quality management. When an individual becomes certified in a designated field, his or her professional achievement is recognized in the eyes of colleagues, government agencies, present and prospective employers, and clients.
• Certification establishes a standard of professional competence which is recognized throughout the industry.
• Certification fosters development of the individual's capabilities through encouragement of long-term career goals.
• Certification promotes quality through continuing education to assure a high level of competence within constantly changing fields.
When applying for additional certifications, do I need to resubmit the supporting documentation?
As a general rule:
Transcripts – No
Employee Verification needs to be specific to the certification applied for.
Professional References are dependent on the year of original submission.
However, there are exceptions:
The CEP, CPQ, BEP, CMVP, CEA, CRM, CSDP, DGCP, CBCP, CRU, and HPB do not require supporting documentation. It is recommended that you contact your Certification Director if you have any uncertainty.
When will I receive my exam confirmation?
All exam confirmations are sent via email and should be received 2-3 weeks after application submission.
If I lose my certification certificate, can you replace it?
We can issue replacement certificates for current certifications. To request a replacement certification certificate, please click here.
