The Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia, with the help of Philadelphia Gas Works, and in cooperation with Wachter & Associated Engineering, designed the installation of the first 290 kW natural gas-fired microturbine array in the City of Philadelphia.
Once complete, with the additional three Microturbines and absorption chiller, the Microturbine array will address 50% of the building’s domestic water and hydronic heating load, 30% of the building’s air conditioning load and 60% of the building’s peak electrical demand. As the initial step in the area’s efforts towards Distributed Generation, the array will avoid the generation of 2,515 tons of carbon dioxide from grid-supplied electricity. The net savings from electrical, heating/chilled water and steam consumption is approximately $300,000 per year. The simple return on investment for this system is about 8 years without incentives; with incentives the return on investment is just under 5 years.
