How to Apply for CIAQP Certification

AEE's Certified Indoor Air Quality Professional (CIAQP) program is designed to provide recognition for indoor air quality professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence in their field, and an in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of indoor air quality assessment, design, management, and problem mitigation. Individuals earning the right to put "CIAQP" behind their names have distinguished themselves as leaders in their profession, exhibiting excellence in the areas of specialized knowledge, experience, proficiency and ethical fitness.

Eligibility
Professionals who have met at least one of the following prerequisites, and who have received written notification from AEE that they meet the criteria for education and experience established by the Certification Board for Indoor Air Quality Professionals will be permitted to take the exam.
The prerequisites to qualify for the certification process have been designed to take into account the possible diversity of education and practical experience an individual may have. However each CIAQP candidate must meet one of the following criteria:

  • The current status of registered professional engineer, certified energy manager, certified industrial hygienist, or registered architect, with at least three years' experience in indoor air quality.

  • A four-year degree or higher in engineering, science, architecture, business or related field, with at least three years' experience in indoor air quality.

  • A two-year technical degree or four-year degree in an unrelated field, with eight years' experience in indoor air quality and three additional CEUs of board-approved training.

  • Ten years of board-approved experience in indoor air quality and four additional CEUs of board-approved training.

Examination Requirement
All candidates for CIAQP certification are required to take and pass a four-hour written, open-book examination.

Fees
A fee of $200 must be paid at the time the CIAQP application is submitted. This fee covers both the application process and the examination. It does not include the cost of optional preparatory seminar programs offered in advance of each exam. Also note that this fee is in addition to the cost of any seminar program for which the candidate may choose to register.

Please note the following:

  • Registering for a preparatory seminar does not automatically register you to take the CIAQP exam. You must submit your certification application separately (see information above).

  • Fees shown for the seminar do not include the $200 certification application/exam fee.

Maintaining Certification
Continuing education is essential to maintaining high standards of professional competency.  A CIAQP must accumulate eight (8) professional credits every three years to maintain certification.

Activities Applicable as Credits for CIAQP Renewal:

Continued employment in indoor air quality-related activities
4 credits for 3 years
Membership in a professional engineering society 1 credit per year

Continuing education:
indoor air quality-related seminars and college courses
(includes in-house or online seminars)

2 credits per:
- CEU earned
(e.g.,1.6 CEU=3.2 credits)
- College credit hour earned
- 10 non-credit contact hours

---(must be submitted for approval)

Professional awards or papers presented and published re: indoor air quality

2 credits each

Offices held in a professional engineering society

1 credit per year

The above serves as a guideline for the 8 credits to be accumulated during each three year renewal period.  A reminder form will be sent during the year your CIAQP certification expires.  Please keep a file of your credits to assist with completing this form.

Calculating Your Continuing Education Credits:
If you wish to use IAQ-related AEE seminars as a part of meeting the 8-credit requirement to maintain certification, note that you will earn 0.8 CEU for each full day of participation in any AEE seminar. For example, a 2-day AEE seminar will earn you 1.6 CEU, or the equivalent of 3.2 credits toward CIAQP renewal. (The four-hour period allotted for certification examinations is not included when calculating the number of contact hours for a seminar.)

Renewal Fee:
A fee of $200 is required for each three-year renewal of your CIAQP certification. If you do not renew your certification by your renewal date, you will be required to retake the exam to be reinstated. It is therefore important to inform AEE if your address changes. Failure to do so will delay your receipt of your renewal notice, and may result in your being required to retake the exam.
