|
ABOUT THE TRADE MISSION China, the world's second-largest energy consumer, has launched an $80 million program with the United Nations to promote efficient use of energy and cut pollution. Beijing, struggling to fuel the world's fastest-growing major economy in the face of rapid demand growth and increasing reliance on oil imports and recurrent power shortages, aims to quadruple GDP by 2020 while just doubling its energy consumption. The program aims to reduce energy consumption by nearly 19 million tons of coal equivalent in the first three-year phase of the program, cutting carbon emissions by 12 million tons. The Trade Mission to China and Southeast Asia is one of
the most important business development opportunities presented internationally
by the Association of Energy Engineers. Delegation Leader Tim Janos, AEE
President Elect, will accompany the delegation on counterpart meetings,
cultural activities, and informal discussion groups throughout the mission.

Meeting Details by City
A common theme we have found in the process of making these arrangements is that there is a great thirst for interchange of knowledge and possible business contacts from both sides. This opportunity is at once both a learning and teaching opportunity for those of us on the Trade Mission.
If you haven't signed up yet you will be missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime. This is critically short and procrastination is no longer an option. Hop on board while there is still time to join this historic mission. Just take a moment or two and read about the arrangements we have made in the various venues below. These are genuinely exciting times and the interest expressed by our host countries has been truly impressive. You owe it to yourself to see the many opportunities you will discover in this mission
Hong
Kong
After we complete our tour of the EMSD Facility described below we will return to meet and dine with the newest AEE Chapter. We will have the honor of present the Chapter Charter to the Hong Kong AEE during a dinner meeting the chapter has arranged at the World Trade Center at Causeway Bay .
We will be delivering a short presentation on energy related topics for our hosts. The evening promises to be an extraordinary and exciting as our host have worked hard to create their chapter and are justifiably proud of what they have accomplished.
Earlier in the afternoon we will be visiting the Electrical & Mechanical Service Department (EMDS) Building. This multi-purpose facility is intended to promote awareness and provide education on energy efficiency, renewable and the work of EMSD through the use of interactive exhibits on three separate floors. The building's construction has incorporated many innovative and energy efficiency features and thus serves to demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of these items.
Among the Energy-saving features of the EMSD facility are the following:
· Solar Photovoltaic Panels – 2300 panels make this the largest installation of its kind in Hong Kong while generating 350KW of electricity. These panels are grid connected and provide about 400,000KWH of electricity annually an amount roughly equal to the total energy consumption of 90 families in Hong Kong.
· Chiller Plant with Ice Storage – EMSD uses chiller off peak to produce slurry ice and thus offset the building peak by storing the slurry in five tanks.
· Ammonia Chillers – To reduce the use of greenhouse gas, the facility was outfitted with very high efficiency ammonia chillers.
· Double-layer curtain walls with return air grills – The facility double glazing with the space between used a return-air ducts.
· Sun Pipes – daylight harvesting and distribution is accomplished thru the installation of 10 collectors on the roof and a system of reflective pipes.
· Motion sensors and daylight sensors – These are used throughout the building to reduce lighting costs when areas are unoccupied and are couples with daylight sensors in the perimeter office to turn off light if ample daylight exists.
· Sunshades – the building is completely outfitted with sunshades to reduce the effects of direct sunlight.
·
Grey water recycling – water from showers, washbasins and kitchen
areas is treated and stored for use in flushing toilets.
In addition to touring the facility
and meeting with the key individuals responsible for the operation of the
facility, we expect to meet with AEE Members in Hong Kong for the purpose
of establishing the chapter.
In Beijing a significant portion of the city's buildings are heated by the Beijing District Heating System. We will be meeting with Mr. Zao Feng and other representatives of the District Heating System to tour and review the operation of the Low Energy Building Demo Project for the Olympics.
One of the major projects of Beijing Science and Technology Council. An open lab for eco-building research. Training platform of Tsinghua University for green building technology.
The low-energy demonstration building is located at the east campus of Tsinghua University with a total area of 2800 m2. It will become a research center of eco-buildings at Tsinghua University , a key open lab and also a demonstration for new building technology and products. In the open lab, researches related to eco-building technology and products will be carried on and technical training on eco-building will also be performed.
The project is out of concern for the concept of sustainability. It will integrate newest research findings from all over the world. The building will utilize renewable energy at lowest level. It will provide occupants with healthy, comfortable and natural and harmonious indoor environment, with less pollution at the same time.
Shanghai
Mr. Lou Zhenfei, Shanghai Energy Conservation Supervision Center , has responded favorably to our visit and has arranged a meeting with key individuals who are our counterparts. This interactive and informative meeting will take place in the Conference Room at the Shanghai Energy Conservation Supervision Facility.
In Singapore a meeting is being arranged by the Economic Development Board (EDB) with the National Environmental Agency and the Industry Committee for Energy Efficiency. We look forward to this opportunity as our hosts have asked us to provide a short presentation of the “energy industry” and conditions in the US .
Bangkok
Mr. Arthit Vechakij, Managing Director of the Excellent Energy International Company, has graciously agreed to host our group during out all to short time in Bangkok . He arranged a meeting that he assures will be both informative and interactive with many key individuals involved in the Energy Business in Thailand .
