ABOUT THE TRADE MISSION

This exclusive study and business development mission will include specially arranged meetings with energy professionals in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Santiago. Since 1985, the Association of Energy Engineers has conducted business development missions around the world. In 2004, AEE will explore the tremendous energy opportunities existing in South America. Members will have the opportunity to learn how to participate in joint ventures, take advantage of U.S. A.I.D. programs and expand their energy service activities in South America. Meetings with utilities will help members gain an understanding of how to meet the growing needs for power generation in Latin America, and what are the future energy management requirements.

For example, in Chile, cogeneration project development is a good medium-to-long-term opportunity for U.S. industry. Chile has an estimated potential of 340 MW of cost-effective cogeneration. There are currently 261 MW in operation. Chilean industry requires technical and financial assistance to implement cogeneration projects.

Another example is in Argentina, where there is an estimated 1,500 MW of untapped cogeneration potential. In addition, Argentina will need 11,350 MW of new generation by the year 2005, much of it likely to be built by the private sector.

Brazilian industry can only supply about 40% of the technology needed for new natural gas fired power plants and the modernization and retrofitting of older oil burning thermal plants, thus leaving ample thermal power equipment and export opportunities for U.S. companies. According to the Export Council for Energy Efficiency, "The U.S. lighting industry has an immediate opportunity to increase sales of electronic ballasts in Chile and South America.

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), in conjunction with South American companies, has developed an outstanding business development trade mission program. The delegation leader, Stephen Roosa has developed the program, which includes networking opportunities with local utilities, government representatives and companies seeking US technologies. Mr. Roosa will accompany the AEE delegation on cultural activities and will be available for information discussions throughout the mission.
